With the recent removal of mask mandates in many settings, and increased use of public transport as more people return to their workplaces, it’s important to stay informed about the current face mask rules on public transport. In Victoria, it is mandatory to wear a face mask on public transport unless you are under 8 years old or have a lawful reason not to. Authorized Officers are enforcing mask wearing on trains, trams, and buses, and those who do not comply may face a fine of up to $100.
For those who forget to bring a mask, they can be obtained at some staffed train stations. The PTV website has a list of regional and metropolitan stations where masks are available. It’s also important to note that this winter, Victorians are facing their first flu season since 2019. Influenza cases have risen sharply in Victoria and most states since late April, and to help protect against these illnesses, the Victorian Government is offering free flu shots during the month of June.

To keep yourself and others safe while travelling on public transport this winter, there are several practical tips to keep in mind. Try to travel outside of peak times when there are fewer passengers and more space to physically distance. Use the PTV’s RideSpace tool to plan your journey and choose services with fewer passengers. Pack a raincoat or umbrella so you don’t have to crowd under shelters, and try to stay mindful of keeping a safe distance from others on escalators, platforms, elevators, and station concourses. Keep your mask on while waiting on platforms, at stops, and within stations, and practice good hygiene by washing your hands or using hand sanitiser before and after you travel. If you are unwell, stay home and get tested, and be aware of slippery surfaces to avoid slips and falls.
